What she did not tell Ladoux however, that she was also approached by the Germans and had planned herself to act as double agent. There was agreed that Mata Hari through Spain should travel to the Netherlands for her further instructions to receive of a French agent.
 
During this journey Margaretha however was apprehended, because the English took her for the
German agent Clara Benedix. After some interrogate she was released, but could not continue
travelling to the Netherlands. On December 11, 1916 she was in Madrid.
 
Because Ladoux did not pass on instructions, the fresh agent herself decided to get to work.
She made contact with both the German military attaché Von bald, as well the French colonel Danvignes.
In the neutral Spain Mata Hari therefore functioned apparent in abundance as double agent.
Her objection that she, to Von bald only briefed old innocent newspaper stories from old
French newspapers, later by the French was not believed.

She decided to leave France immediately and by means of Switzerland and German to travel back to the Netherlands But the French authorities refused her the required exit visa. A month later, on February 13, on her hotel door was knocked. Six agents came to arrest her, on suspicion of espionage for the Germans.

The military information which she channelled of Von Kalle to the French Danvignes, proved moreover never has arrived in Paris.

During or before her activities, she never informed the French secret service of her being approached also by the Germans, and accepted money of them.

When beginning January 17 Mata Hari was in Paris, she heard Vadime the Massloff had been warned for her.
